JOYSTICK
MODUAL
Digidrive II is the only digital driving system in
the world (Patent # 5,086,870). It incorporates "Drive By Wire"
technology, utilizing redundant microprocessor control typically only
found in advanced aircraft flight control systems! Safety through
design has made Digidrive II the choice of many physically challenged
individuals requiring Gas/Brake and Steering controls from a single
joystick interface. The Digidrive II system eliminates the need for
conventional hydraulic backup systems and expensive factory steering
box modifications required with other systems. Your vehicle Gas/Brake
and Steering control efforts remain the way the vehicle manufacturer
intended!
In
today's tough economy, "multi-user" vehicles are almost
a necessity due to personal scheduling conflicts as well as financial
concerns. Your vehicle's original airbag, steering wheel, accelerator,
and brake pedals remain fully functional for use by able-bodied
drivers. In fact, Digidrive II can be disengaged for able-bodied
usage in less than 30 seconds. The compact design of the Digidrive
II CPU mounts to the vehicle floorboard between the two front seats.
The most visible component of the Digidrive II system is the Joystick
Module. All driver inputs for controlling Gas, Brake and Steering
functions are accomplished with the 2-axis Joystick. The Steering
axis is side to side with left being left steer and right being
right steer. The front to back axis controls the Gas and Brake functions
with the direction being selectable as to push or pull for brake.
The Status Module is the method through which the system informs
you of its operating mode and displays the function of the sensor
systems. The Emergency Backup button is located on this module and
provides manual engagement of the backup systems.
DIGI
COMPUTER MODULE
Fault Tolerant design means safer operation. All
joystick, computer, and power circuits are completely redundant
(backup systems included) within the Computer Module. Either computer
processor can sense irregularities in the system operating parameters
and automatically switch to the backup processor capable of controlling
the vehicle 100 times faster than you could! Of course, you also
have the option of utilizing the "manual" Emergency Backup
switch.
Diagnostic ports allow your installing dealer to update any software
changes from EMC and to print diagnostic reports detailing the operational
history of your driving system to include, hours of operation, detailed
fault analysis, and vehicle type. The Computer Module can be configured
to operate up to 256 different makes/model years of vehicles, as
they become applications for Digidrive II.
Driver
Training ports are standard equipment on all Digidrive II Computer
Modules and enable you to receive your required driver training
in the comfort of your own personal vehicle. Your personal driver
evaluator/trainer simply plugs their EMC Evaluator Panel into your
Computer Module when they are driving with you. Contact your dealer
or EMC for the evaluation center nearest you.
STEERING
MODULE
The DS-2000 addresses all of your safety concerns
surrounding air bag removal, horizontal steering, factory hydraulic
system modifications and able-bodied drivability. This is the world's
first and only Digital Steering System and DS-2000 is engineered
and manufactured with the latest in technology and function. The
DS-2000 eliminates the need for zero and reduced effort steering
box modifications. The steering effort stays factory with no modifications!
DS-2000 also eliminates the need for conventional hydraulic backup
systems with the use of redundant computers and a powerful, 4-pole
steering servo design. The factory steering column remains fully
functional for able-bodied operation. The Steering Module, with
its six-inch steering wheel, can be located anywhere in the driving
area. The effort of the miniature steering wheel is approximately
6-10 oz. at a 4-inch radius. To further meet your needs, EMC manufactures
several orthotic interfaces (see orthotic devices) and the orthotic
neutral position can be changed by the driver while stopped at a
stop sign. The DS-2000 Steering Module features a Status Display
panel with high intensity status lamps and audible warnings to convey
system information to the driver. The Steering Wheel utilizes a
"friction" sleeve for increased feel as well as clutched
end stop supports for rugged dependability.
COMPUTER
MODULE
The Computer Module is truly "state-of-the-art".
All control circuits are modeled after those of the proven design
in Digidrive II...only miniaturized for this application. The Computer
Module only measures 8.5"L x 6.5"W x 1.8"H and conveniently
locates behind the dash panel in most van applications. Using innovative
design and technology advances, EMC driving controls have evolved
to benefit you...today, and into the future.
Fault
Tolerant design means safer operation. All joystick, computer, and
power circuits are completely redundant (backup systems included)
within the Computer Module. Either computer processor can sense
irregularities in the system operating parameters and automatically
switch to the backup processor capable of controlling the vehicle
100 times faster than you could! Of course, you also have the option
of utilizing the "manual" Emergency Backup switch.
The
Steering Servomotor is modeled after the proven design in Digidrive
II and comes completely assembled and calibrated ready to plug in.
This compact, powerful design is installed to the base of the factory
steering column under the dashboard of your vehicle and does not
impair able-bodied operation of the factory steering wheel. The
patented "disengage" mechanism allows your able-bodied
friends and family to drive your vehicle using the factory wheel
by simply flipping a lever. DS-2000 puts you in complete control
as the servo communicates "positional feedback" information
back to the Computer Module whenever you steer using the miniature
Steering Module. No modifications to the factory steering gearbox
or pump are required due to the large torque that the 4-pole servomotor
is capable of exerting on the steering shaft. Should your vehicle
stall or the power steering pump or drive belt fail, the "Quad"
Brush motor also provides redundancy in the form of two separate
pairs of motor windings.
EGB
The EGB-SS is the latest model Electronic Gas &
Brake System manufactured by EMC. It is designed to operate the
accelerator and brake of virtually any motor vehicle equipped with
an automatic transmission and power brakes from a convenient joystick
control module. The connections are simple and the space required
minimal, allowing easy and versatile positioning for an optimum
fit. The brake is actuated through an electric servomotor that applies
force by means of a drive arm and roller designed to ride on the
pedal. The accelerator is accessed via a cable that is attached
to the accelerator pedal linkage and is driven by a spool in the
servomotor. The powerful 4-pole motor can provide vehicle braking
even when there is no power assist available from the vehicle. An
external backup battery source combined with redundant power circuits
within the controller, maintain power to the system if there is
a loss of the vehicle primary 12vDC supply. In the unlikely event
of brake failure, the EGB-SS accesses the electric parking brake
in a momentary fashion when full brake is applied. The emergency
brake access can be used to stop the vehicle. The road "feel"
of the EGB-SS is totally unique due to its patented design incorporating
"low effort" actuation of the joystick resulting in smooth
acceleration and braking commands. Universal Application Design
means fewer "custom" parts. The EGB-SS can be removed
from one vehicle and installed in another if frequent vehicle trading
is in your plans. Multiple Electronics and Power Supplies eliminate
the need for cumbersome braking backup systems. Only four wires
connect under the hood of your vehicle. Modular Design means quicker
service and maintenance appointments. EGB-SS does not interfere
with the factory controls so conventional operation is as simple
as pushing a switch.
GAS/BRAKE
SERVOMOTOR
The Digidrive II Gas/Brake servomotor comes completely
assembled and calibrated ready to plug in. This compact, powerful
design bolts to the floor of your vehicle to the left of the factory
brake pedal and the integral drive arm simply pushes on the brake
pedal with no additional mechanical linkages and does not impair
able-bodied operation of the factory gas and brake pedals. Digidrive
II puts you in complete control as the servo communicates "positional
feedback" information back to the Computer Module whenever
you accelerate or brake using the joystick. No modifications to
the factory brake cylinder or booster are required due to the powerful
4-pole motor design. The "Quad" Brush motor not only generates
greater than 200 in-lbs of torque, but also provides redundancy
in the form of two separate pairs of motor windings. For additional
safety, the Gas/Brake servomotor also incorporates an accelerator
release mechanism. This component of the control automatically releases
the accelerator if power to the servomotor is lost or if either
of the two control harnesses is severed.
